Wells Park – Softball & Baseball Fields
This project was completed in two phases, with Phase 1 finished in 2018 and Phase 2 in 2022. The scope included the development of a softball field & baseball field with fencing, backstops, covered dugouts, bleachers, a warming track, and tree planting, as well as the expansion of an existing gravel parking lot. The field design incorporated advanced drainage solutions, such as a sub-surface drainage system, drainage swales and dry wells.
The project presented several challenges due to the limited available land and scattered layers of peat. Where feasible, peat was removed and stockpiled, and geogrids were used to stabilize the soil where it was not feasible to remove. Stormwater management was another significant challenge, given the irregular shape of the land surface. To address this, we created a 3D digital terrain model to optimize the balance of cut and fill materials while accounting for the peat. Because of the uncertain quantity of peat, the project was issued as a unit-price tender to accommodate variability.
The completed fields meets high-quality standards suitable for national tournaments. The Glenn Group’s signature curved sidelines were added to enhance the field’s visual appeal. Winter site clearing under a separate tender helped reduce costs, simplified surveying, and allowed the site to dry out more quickly in spring. The project was divided into three phases to facilitate budget management over 6 fiscal years. Durable clay bricks were used to stabilize the infield mix in critical areas like the batter’s box and pitching mound.
